How to make an herbal bath without the mess

There’s nothing quite like sinking into a warm, herbal-infused bath after a long day. The combination of minerals and herbs can help ease tension, support relaxation, and create a moment of calm. But if you’ve ever used herbal bath soaks, you might have noticed that loose herbs in the tub can leave behind a bit of a mess—which is why I love this simple, clean method for preparing an herbal bath.

Why Herbal Baths?

Herbal bath salts combine the benefits of minerals and botanical infusions to nourish the body and calm the mind. Rich in magnesium from Epsom salt these blends help ease muscle tension, support nerve function, and promote relaxation. Essential oils provide aromatherapy benefits, enhancing deep breathing and stress relief. When steeped like tea before being added to the bath, the herbs release their full properties without the mess of floating plant material in your tub. Read along for my simple step by step instructions for a relaxing and clean bath tub experience.

How to Prepare an Herbal Bath (Without the Mess!)

Instead of adding the bath soak directly into the tub, I like to steep it first—just like a strong herbal tea. This method allows the minerals and plant compounds to infuse into the water while keeping cleanup easy.

In these photos, I’m using Soothing Soak, which contains arnica, meadowsweet, and lavender—an herbal combination that helps calm the mind, ease soreness, pain, and inflammation. I also make a Cold + Flu Soak infused with our Renew essential oil blend, designed to help ease body aches and clear congestion.

Step 1: Steep the Herbs

In a glass teapot or a pot on the stove, add 4 tablespoons of your chosen bath soak to about 4-6 cups of water.

Step 2: Simmer & Infuse

Bring the water to a gentle simmer and let the herbs infuse for 10 minutes. This process helps extract the beneficial properties from the botanicals, creating a potent bath infusion.

Step 3: Strain & Pour

Using a fine-mesh strainer, pour the infused bath water directly into your tub, leaving the herbs behind. Now you have all the benefits of the herbs without having to scrub them out of the tub afterward!

Bonus Tips for the Ultimate Herbal Bath Experience

  • Play calming music to enhance the relaxation experience.

  • Light a candle and take deep breaths as you soak, allowing the scents to ground you.

  • Stay hydrated! Herbal baths help open the pores and release toxins, so drinking a warm tea or water alongside your bath can be extra nourishing.

This method keeps your bath clean and lets you fully enjoy the experience without worrying about the mess. Whether you’re using our Soothing Soak for relaxation or the Cold & Flu Soak for extra respiratory support, this simple preparation ensures you get the most out of your herbal bath ritual.
